Preparing Your Home for Vacation

Everyone deserves vacation—without the stress of worrying about your home! A holiday should be a time for rest and rejuvenation, but the reality is that your house might be unattended when you leave. Here’s a few ways to reduce your stress and increase your chances of keeping your house in pristine condition for when you return.

Check Your Insurance

Different home insurance companies have various rules when a home is left unoccupied. Did you know that some companies require you to have someone checking your home every 24-48 hours, or else your claim could be ineligible if something were to happen? For instance, if your sink flooded, but it wasn’t noticed for multiple days, insurance may not cover the damage. So before you head off on your travels, read over or call your brokerage to become familiar with their requirements.

Have a Trusted Friend Check In

Now that you know what insurance requires of you, make sure you have a friend or family member that you trust to check in on your house. Aside from watering plants, getting the mail, and feeding pets, ask them to check that taps and lights are off, take a look under sinks, and check that all doors and windows are locked.

Check Your Boxes

The best way to be sure that everything is in order before you leave is to create a checklist. If you have a security system, check that all cameras and sensors are working. From the safety of your home to keeping your plants alive, being able to check off every box will give you peace of mind that nothing has been missed.

Allow yourself to be fully immersed in your holiday without having to worry about your home!
